Regretting You Movie Review – Plot, Performance & Verdict

Synopsis of Regretting You

Setting the stage

Morgan Grant is a young mother who put her own dreams on hold when she became a parent in her late teens. Her teenage daughter, Clara, now 17, is caught in the tension between wanting to break free of her mother’s path and the guilt of not being closer to her.

The tragic turning point

When Morgan’s husband Chris and her younger sister Jenny die in a single car crash, the event shatters the fragile peace of their lives. In the wake of the tragedy, long-buried secrets begin to surface — the nature of Chris and Jenny’s last hours together, Morgan’s regrets about choices she made, and Clara’s growing resentment that her mother’s life has been defined by sacrifice.

The emotional fallout

Clara is reeling not only from grief but from a burgeoning identity crisis — she’s forming a relationship of her own, pushing back against her mother, and trying to reconcile her ambition (to leave her small town, to be more than “daughter of Morgan”) with her loyalty. Morgan meanwhile must face whether she truly knows the man she loved, the sister she lost, and the daughter she’s raised.

Path toward healing (or further rupture)

As Morgan and Clara navigate separate strands of pain and anger, their lives begin to intersect in unexpected ways: Morgan is drawn into a relationship with Jonah (Jenny’s widowed husband), Clara is exploring first love with Miller, and the two must each ask: How do we move forward when the past refuses to stay buried? How do you forgive someone you never thought you’d have to live without — and how do you forgive yourself?

The central message

At its heart, Regretting You is a story of grief, regret, and the hope of reconnection. It examines what happens when the roles of mother and daughter reverse — when the daughter becomes the consolation, the mother becomes the one who needs to be saved — and how the bonds of family can both crush and carry us.
